Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 1, 2026
KiCad Viewer (“the app,” “we,” “us”) is a tool for opening and inspecting KiCad projects on your phone or tablet. We built it to do its job without collecting your personal data. This policy explains what the app accesses, what stays on your device, and the limited cases where data leaves it.
01 The short version
- We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers.
- Your KiCad projects are parsed and rendered locally on your device.
- We do not run our own analytics or tracking servers.
- Data only leaves your device when you connect to a third party, such as GitHub.
02 Files you open
When you open a local KiCad project, the app reads the project files directly from your device’s storage to render the schematic, board, and bill of materials. These files are processed entirely on your device. We do not upload, copy, or transmit your project files to us or to any third party.
The app may keep a short list of recently opened projects (names and file paths) on your device so you can reopen them quickly. This list stays local and can be cleared at any time from within the app.
03 Connecting to GitHub
If you choose to clone or open a repository from GitHub, the app connects to GitHub on your behalf using credentials you provide through GitHub’s own sign-in flow. In that case:
- Your access token is stored securely on your device (in the operating system’s secure storage) and is used only to talk to GitHub.
- Repository contents you clone are downloaded to your device and treated like any other local project.
- Your use of GitHub is also governed by GitHub’s own privacy policy and terms.
You can disconnect your GitHub account at any time, which removes the stored token from your device.
04 Information we do not collect
The app does not require an account with us, and we do not collect your name, email address, contacts, location, or the contents of your projects. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-app tracking.
05 Diagnostics
If the app crashes, your device’s operating system (Apple or Google) may offer to send anonymized crash diagnostics to the platform, subject to your device settings. Any such reports are handled by the platform under its own privacy policy and do not include your project files. You can disable crash sharing in your device’s system settings.
06 Data storage and security
Because your projects and any connection tokens live on your device, their security depends in part on your device’s own protections — passcode, biometric lock, and disk encryption. We recommend keeping your operating system up to date and protecting your device with a screen lock.
07 Children’s privacy
KiCad Viewer is a tool for hardware and electronics work and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
08 Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes will be reflected in the app or on this page.
